Digital camera flash tips
Flash range
Whenever using the flash, make sure to stay within the recommended range for the focal length you're using. The flash range changes according to the zoom/focal length used.
Don't solely rely on the flash
If you're inside taking photos during the day, open doors and curtains to let in outside, natural light to supplement the flash. Otherwise, turn on additional lights in the room.
White balance
If you use a flash in a room or area where the lighting is artificial (eg. incandescent or fluorescent), photos will have a color cast. For more natural color, change the white balance setting to match the main source of light. Some digital cameras have a Flash white balance setting.
Red-eye
One of the best ways to prevent red-eye when using a built-in digital camera flash is to ask subjects to not look directly at the camera when taking the shot. Turning on more lights in the room can also help reduce red-eye.
Fill-in flash
Using the flash outside in an effective method to bring out details in a subject that would otherwise be lost in shadows. Take the flash out of auto mode and change it to on. The subject must be within the flash range for fill-flash to be effective.
