Digital camera manual
The dreaded, multi-page book that came in the box really must be read if you want to get the most out of a digital camera. Even a manual for the most basic digital camera is surprisingly thick.
A quick-start guide is fine for getting started taking pictures, but if that's all you read you may eventually find yourself in a jam. Besides explaining the features of your digital camera, most manuals offer a wealth of useful information, illustrations and techniques about taking photos.
Digital camera manual format
A manual presents information from the simple to more complex aspects of your digital camera. It begins with illustrations of the camera from all angles and explains each button, lever and the toggle switch.
The manual guides you through camera set-up such as inserting batteries and memory cards, and attaching the camera strap. It gives information about basic camera use and how to use the shooting and playback modes. A section dealing with the Setup Menu explains how to adjust all settings. It then then explains the more advanced features of your camera.
Getting the most out of a camera manual
- Don't be afraid to tackle the manual. You'll do fine if you don't try to absorb too much information all at once.
- Read the manual through once, though not necessarily in one sitting. Concentrate first on the sections about set-up and basic camera use. Have the camera nearby as your read. When you have a basic feel for the camera, take some photos.
- Read the manual a second time, this time skipping over portions that you feel you understand. Go out again and take more photos.
By this time you should feel more comfortable with your digital camera. In fact, you're probably spending more time using it than reading the manual. Now refer to the manual only when you're not sure about a particular feature, or when you're ready to learn a new one.
If you haven't owned your digital camera for a long time and go on a trip, it's a good idea to take the manual along.
