New digital camera users

We all have to start somewhere. Articles in this section cover general topics of interest to first time users of both compact digital cameras and DSLRs.

Here are a few important initial suggestions to consider as you begin your journey into the world of digital photography:

Read the manual

Honestly. You should!

The quick start guide that comes wtih digital camera is fine for getting started taking snapshots. It can be tempting to set aside the full manual. If all you read is the quick guide, you'll eventually find yourself in a camera rut. Here's how to get the most out of your digital camera manual.

Use the shutter-release button correctly

The shutter-release button on a digital camera functions differently than one on a film camera. It must be pressed in two steps: first to lock focus and exposure, second to take the photo. If you don't use the shutter-release button correctly, photos will be improperly focused and exposed. In addition, images will be blurred. More information >

Keep the camera steady

Digital cameras are prone to camera shake, even if they have image stabilization. Keep your camera as steady as possible when taking shots. Use a camera support in very low light.

If it only has a LCD monitor, it will be impossible to brace the camera against your face as when using a viewfinder. So learn how to hold a digital camera correctly, even if it has image stabilization.

Reset the camera if things get messed up

It's not uncommon to inadvertently select a wrong menu, so images may not appear as expected. If this happens, reset your camera as outlined in the manual.
