You're not alone in your question. Most of us are shocked at how fast digital cameras zap alkaline batteries.
If you don't take lots of photos and your camera accepts lithium batteries (not all do so it's important you check your manual or call the camera manufacturer), give them a try. They have a shelf-life of 10 years, are said to have seven times the life of alkalines and are quite lightweight. However they are expensive.
If you take more than a few photos every now and then, invest in rechargeable batteries and a battery charger. They will save you lots of money in the long run. Most manufacturers recommend NiMH.
