ive been researching things about 35mm equivalent values, and i Kind of understand, but i just wanted to know what is the best 35mm equivalent number to have?

im looking at a camera with 35 - 175mm .. is this good? if not what range am i looking for?

Hi Laura,

Welcome to the Q&A Board!

A 175mm range is longer than most digital cameras have. 35mm is standard. It sounds like a very good, all purpose range.

One of the best ways to tell if the range is suitable is to know what type of photography you're interested in. You may want a longer zoom lens if you take a lot of action or long distance shots. If so, you should also consider a camera with Image Stabilization.

Or you may prefer a wider angle lens, such as a 28mm/35mm equivalent lens. Wide angle lenses are great for interior and exterior building shots, landscapes and other wide scenes and for photographing large groups of people.
