I am looking at buying a digital camera for the main purposes of photographing small objects like jewellery and artwork, does any one have some suggestions on the best types available for these purposes.
Thankyou

Hi elfkin! Welcome!

You'll want to purchase a digital camera which has a Macro mode. Macro modes allow you take very close-up shots of subjects such as flowers, jewelry, insects, etc.

In addition, it's a good idea to use a tripod for macro shots. This helps prevent camera shake.

I'm not a professional photograher but have taken some fairly satisfactory photos of jewelry without using a lot of expensive equipment and special lights. You can see some of them here:

I took these particular photos outside, under an awning. The day was bright but overcast. The light was diffused so there were no harsh shadows. I used white paper for the background, though a white cloth would work too.

I put my digital camera in macro mode and set it on a tripod to get close to the subject. My camera was also set in single auto focus. Every time you press the shutter release button with your finger, there is a chance of camera shake, particularly at slow shutter speeds. So I use the camera's self-timer when taking close-up shots.

Many digital cameras have Macro modes and most work extremely well. I've heard the "older" Nikon CoolPix 4500 is an excellent consumer digital camera for close-ups. It has a split body design and excellent quality lens.

Cameras with swivels LCDs should also be considered. You can change the position of the LCD to get a better view of the image when the camera is positioned at an awkward angle.

Here's a great and very helpful article about close-up photography by Moderator Deb:
