I know I've seen a chart before that shows how many approximate pictures per memory card can be taken depending on the resolution.  Does anyone know where I can find such a chart?  Or maybe how many can be taken on a 1 megapixel camera that has 2MB internal memory.
Thanks

Hi Alexis, and welcome!

You won't be able to get many images on a 2MB internal memory. Image file sizes can be quite large, even a low quality settings. It's great to have an internal memory in a pinch, but you really will need a card or two.

We have a chart at our site which should help answer your question:

I don’t think that chart is accurate…I have a 3.2 megapixel canon A70, and I have a 256mb card, I can only take 154 photos at the highest resolution. Why does that chart say I can take 212 with a 256mb card, and only 226 photos with a 512mb, shouldn’t that be something like 424 photos with a 512mb card?

Hi Martin, I think you're right. There appears to be a typo in there. Here's a link to the latest chart at the Lexar Media site.

Good catch, Martin. Thank you for pointing it out. Yes it was a typo. The numbers are approximate as suggested in the footnote however to make it clearer, I've added the word approximate.

The number of images you can store on a memory card can vary from camera to camera, even though each may be considered a 3 megapixel camera. You have a 3.2 megapixel Canon. My 3 megapixel camera has 3.1 million effective pixels. Other cameras have 3.0 million effective pixels. In addition, each digital camera manufacturer may use slightly different compression schemes.

It's important to understand, too, that the colors which appear in a digital image, as well as the overall complexity of the scene, directly relates to the file size of an image. Check out the file size of a couple of your images, all taken at the same resolution and quality setting. File sizes will not be the same. Also, a photo shot in black and white will be smaller file size than the same photo taken in full color.

As an example, I have several images on my hard drive which were all taken at 5 megapixel/highest quality setting. No one file size in the same. One image file size I just checked is 1.8 megabytes while the file size of the very next one, taken at the same settings, is 2.5 megabytes!

In your case, depending on the scene, sometimes you'll get more than 154 photos at highest resolution on your membory card, sometimes less.

If you have any further questions, please let us know. And thanks again for pointing out the typo! Input from our site visitors is encouraged, welcomed and always very much appreciated!
