i need to switch to a dig cam that has this feature. what's it called, formally?  my last dig cam had it -- i could always see the image on my cam screen, but on my new (crappy) camera, i can't.

Hi Melissa and welcome!

I'm assuming you are asking about an Electronic Viewfinder (EVF). An Electronic Viewfinder functions in a similar fashion to the LCD monitor on back of a digital camera. It is often easier to see things than when using an optical viewfinder, which is found on a lot of digital cameras.

Besides being brighter, an electric viewfinder displays some of the camera settings, such as shutter speed and aperture, so you don't have to move your eye from the viewfinder to glance at the LCD.
