This is an interesting question. Unfortunately, and I do apologize, I'm not entirely sure what you're asking.

Do you mean that you'd like your digital camera to work similar to a webcam where, after it is connected, you can take single shots which will be saved to your hard drive?  If not, please clarify your question a bit further.

If I understand you correctly, try this:

When you install the driver for your camera, an icon for it usually appears in your computer's control panel, or as a separate drive. With my webcam, I can right-click on its icon in the control panel and access its properties. When the properties dialog box opens, I can click on a button to take a single shot.

I do know that not all digital cameras can be used as webcams. Contact the technical support department of the company who manufactured your camera to find out if your model has that capability.

Hello Robbie,
Are you referring to a process known as "remote capture" by any chance? This is a method used in studio, scientific and technical photography environments. The digital camera is fired remotely using a computer with the image(s) then being written to the computer's harddrive instead of the camera's storage media. Also, the image is previewed on the computer monitor rather on the camera's tiny LCD.

There are softwares available to accomplish this. Several are Nikon Capture (www.nikonusa.com), Canon Remote Capture (www.canonusa.com), and DSLR Remote Pro by Breeze Systems (www.breezesys.com/index.htm). If your camera is compatible, you can download trial versions and see which one you prefer.

Enjoy your new camera!
