Hi

Is the Auto WB effective  ie; does it auto adjusts WB based on situation or should the WB be selected manually ) if yes under what circumstances. Ideally how effective is auto WB?

On most digital cameras, auto white balance is very effective. I only change it in unusual lighting such as when inside where incandescent or florescent light is dominant; or mixed lighting like at an evening sporting event. WB can be changed for special effect, too.

Here's more info on White Balance:

White balance can often easily be corrected when editing photos. Still, it's good to try to get it right at the time of the actual shot.

We also have information on Custom White Balance at the main site.

Thank you for the advise Gail ;
Just a few queries when you say high florescent or  incandescent lighting do you go for Florescent, Incandescent WB respectively and what do you use for sports scenario you mentioned.

And thanks for the links, I have bookmarked the learn section  and techniques section of the site I’ll go through each topic carefully.

I pick the setting that matches the lighting; and check on the LCD screen as you can actually see the color changes as you use different white balance settings.

As to mixed lighting, such as at some sports events, I'd use a custom white balance. Saying this, if you edit, most photo editing programs do quite a good job at correcting white balance with a few clicks of your mouse.

btw, you've asked some very good questions in all your posts!
