A match (or equivalent) moved quickly during a long exposure? Or maybe not fire per se, but a light source?

I doubt it's a simple flame, it looks much too elongated for that.

In any case, it's a beautiful image.

No cigar yet Bernard. The light source was off camera flash at a 45 degree angle.
1st hint - it's not (exactly) a solid.Cheesy

Well, Mike, I'll have to pass. I'm pretty sure it's a fluid (liquid or gas) but your "hint" doesn't help me, quite the contraty. Wink Let's see what other people think.

You're a party pooper Deb...  Roll Eyes Grin I hope that big grin means you're feeling better.
Anyway, yes it's smoke, color adjusted with the hue & saturation in PSP.
Here are a couple of examples, tweaked only with DPP.
Larger image linked (make sure you click the first one to enlarge, it looks bad compressed by the browser) Sad

I thought this one looked like a dragon after I rotated it.

Just some playing I did over the weekend. Wink

Thanks Bernard but don't get carried away. It wasn't an original concept Sad and I've no doubt something you could do just as well if you were of a mind to. Wink
In fact if it hadn't been so cold and windy I might not have spent the time and shutter activations working the kinks out of my setup. I would have been layered up and climbing in some icy gorge. Grin
