Does the foreground (specifically the dead branch to the lower right corner) detract from this pic?

<edit>Smaller version, sorry, forgot everyone isn't using a 19" monitor</edit> Embarrassed

A larger version can be seen here

Not necessarily.

When I follow the link to your full sized image, I do think it needs to be cropped somehow to bring emphasis on the falls. You may want to play with the Rule of Thirds so the falls are not smack in the middle.

Really lovely photo!

Site visitors can read more about The Rule of Thirds here:
http://www.digicamhelp.com/what-is-the-rule-of-thirds/rule-of-thirds.htm

It is not a rule, but a very good guideline of composition.

Something a little more along these lines?

The second has a slight change in exposure. The difference in sharpness etc is due to applying unsharp masking, saturation touch up, etc AFTER resizing. It's tough to demonstrate with a small image so here's a link to a larger version here.
Note: I'm still playing with PSP9 and I'm not all that thrilled with the new USM.

You had to pic such a difficult photo to begin with, Mike.  Grin  Tongue Seriously, you really want to challenge us, and that's good.

Image editing and cropping are so subjective but here are my honest thoughts. Your crop is better however now you have sort of an "emptiness" and a big boulder at the center.

Here's my attempt at cropping to put emphasis on the falls:

As an aside, I selected the some of the bright green leaves with a Magic Wand tool. Then I reduced the brightness and contrast so they don't draw the eye to the left bottom corner so much.

Next, I selected some of the white part of the water and added brightness. Next, I selected the entire photo except the leaf area and applied an unsharp mask which sharpness and brings out additional contrast.

Someone else may come along and have an entirely different take. It's really a matter of personal taste.

When I can get my hands on the original I'll see if I can tweak the exposure a bit to allow the rock that is the "emptyness" to show better. I intentionally underexposed to avoid blowing the highlights in the water so I should have some play room. Ah the advantage of shooting raw. Er' file format, you know, not...  Grin Tongue

Yes, I like it a lot better. I like that you brought out some of the highlights.
