Hello Hannah and welcome!

Your question is really too large to get a specific answer. First of all, there are many memory card formats out there, and usually only one will work with your camera. The most common are Secure Digital (SD), Compact Flash (CF), Memory Stick (MS, only used on Sony cameras), xD (only used in Fuji and Olympus cameras). The older MMC format is compatible with SD readers. A new SD format, called SDHC, has the same physical appearance as regular SD, but will only work on SDHC compatible cameras and readers.

SD cards are becoming more and more common, and could be considered the rising standard. CF cards are still used mainly in DSLR cameras. So the format you should choose is the one that will correspond to your camera.

Now, regarding brands, most are fairly equal. some people have reported fake cards being sold on eBay, but apart from that I don't know of issues with particular brands. Sandisk is the best known brand, but that doesn't mean their cards are better (they're certainly as good as the rest, but better is a strong word). Lexar, ATP, Kingston are all well regarded brands. There are others, too many to list here.

Tell us more about the specifics of your question, and we'll help better.

Thank you for the helpful information. I should have been more specific but you've answered my question. I was wanting to know some reliable name brands.
