I own a Sony HVL-F32X external flash.  It works great on my faltering well-used Sony f828.  I just purchased a Nikon D40.  How can I determine if it is safe to try the Sony flash on the Nikon camera?  I would also love to use my trusty old Vivitar 285 flash on the Nikon too, but I know that the trigger voltage is probably too high.  I am just looking for info on whether it is safe to do a test, I'm not looking for opinions on the quality of the results.  Thanks.

I wouldn't take the risk of trying it without first talking to Nikon Support. You can find them at http://www.nikonusa.com/template.php?goingto=dtc_options&cat=1&grp=2&productNr=25420
