Greetings everybody, thank you for taking my question. I have a Canon SD-700 and I just put a 4GB memory card in and it is reading memory card error, and it won't let me format the card. I just bought the card off e-bay and their is know instructions, so is the card damaged or am I doing something wrong? Please help.

THANKS,
JOHN

Hi and welcome!

Standard SD card readers (and devices using such cards) are normally rated for cards of 2 GB and less, the communication protocols are not made for larger capacity cards. Some manufacturers make larger capacity, such as your 4 GB, but there's no warranty that the card will be recognized.

Recently, a new protocol, called SDHC (high capacity) was developped, for 4-8 GB (maybe more some day). But you need both a SDHC card and a SDHC reader or device to use such a card.

So I'm guessing you eithe have a SDHC card that your camera won't recognize, or a regular SD card that won't work with your camera.

The SD700 does not take Secure Digital High Capacity cards, so if you bought one by mistake, it will not work with the camera. See if the packaging has the SDHC logo on it, as shown here:

Even if it's not a SDHC, a 4GB card will probably not work with the SD700. At least that's what Canon implies here:

http://web.canon.jp/imaging/pssd700is/spe-e.html

Under the Recording Media heading it says:

"This camera has been tested with memory cards through 2GB. Use of all memory cards cannot be guaranteed."

Hopefully you'll be able to exchange your current card.
