I don't own a tripod, so I don't exactly know how the legs are. I want to carry it where ever I go because I have trouble keeping steady.

Hi Luis, as far as I know all "normal height" tripods have retracting legs. You might take a look here to get an idea of the variety of tripods available.

There are also some articles here at digicamhelp which may help as well.

What's the point of wearing your favorite rocketship underpants if nobody ever asks to see 'em?

Yes, Mike is right, most do have retractable legs.

I have owned several different types and can offer a suggestion for what to look for.

I am not an expert on what the terms are called, I just know how certain models work.  Some have tighteners/knobs on the adjustable legs that you screw/twist/turn to tighten or loosen.  Those are a nuisance - to me.  Too much trouble and takes too long to adjust.   :-/

Some, however, have a lever-like tightener/lock that merely "snaps" to lock in place.  That is much, much quicker and easier.  And they seem more stable.  Smiley

Just something to keep in mind when shopping for a tripod. Smiley
