Hi,

I have a Canon S2 IS.  I was experiencing some focus problems when using zoom until I read posts on this site.  Small adjustments I have made in the way I take pictures have improved the quality and my overall happiness with the camera.

Now I am preparing for a Scuba trip and went looking for a housing but have not found anything specific for the S2 IS.  There is a housing for the S1.  Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Brent

Hi Brent and welcome to the Q&A Board!

I'm glad you found the S2 information helpful. It's always nice when someone lets us know.

It is my understanding that the housing for the S1 does not work with the S2. The last I heard, Canon is not planning to make an underwater housing for it. But you can check by calling them:

US #: 1-800-OK-CANON

I understand that Ewas Marine makes a housing for the S2. You can read about their gear here:

http://www.ewa-marine.com/english/e-photo.htm

Hope this helps!

Hi all,

This was my first time to this site and have found you info very helpful. When purchasing my S2IS only a few months ago I had never been snorkling so had no need for a housing. But went snorkling on holidays and have now got the bug!! I couldnt find any other helpful info anywhere on the net just a lot of uming and aring if canon were going to make one.

Thanks again Alison Smiley

Hi Alison and thanks for that feedback. As Gail indicated above though it isn't necessary to wait 'til 2006 as EWA Marine has a housing available now. Wink

Click on the link for the specific housing available. Cheesy

Hi, May I state that the digitalcamerawarehouse.com.au (as mentioned in an earlier question) has been misleading their customers for some time in an attempt to sell the canon S2 IS by stating that an underwater case will be available in early 2006, Please note they have no idea when or if one will actually become available at all, and like I say just say this to sell this model.
I have quizzed them at large on their source of information after much research into this matter and found that they are lacking of knowledge. This was a company that in the first release of this model sold me a case to suit a S1 IS assuring me it would fit, It did not!

Thanks Eddie and Alisson for your pointers.

It has come to my attention that Ikelite claim they will have a model available by December. I don't know how reputable this brand is, but they do have many housings for many different cameras.

From my understanding, rigid housings have the edge over bag-like ones (such as the ones from EWA-marine) because pressure tends to make the bags more difficult to manipulate, and pressing buttons through them can be complicated. Rigid housings have spring-loaded buttons that connect to the camera's controls, so it should be easier. However, these details come from reports from other users, as I have no experience with bag-like housings myself. If the housing will be used mainly for shallow water snorkeling, anyway, pressure shouldn't be an issue, and a cost-effective choice might be better indicated.

One very important thing to consider is whether the company has a warranty policy (a real one) in case the housing fails and water damages the camera. I'm positive Canon will not repair for free a camera dropped in water...

Seems like ikelite is doing a underwater housing for the S2 at $750 (not cheap)

Thanks for the heads-up Pascal. We appreciate you taking time to share the info.

You ain't kidding it's not cheap...but it looks very well made and is obviously for real serious stuff.

Here's a direct link to the housing:

I just stumbled onto this site after quite a search for a housing for my new S2 IS. It looks like it may be a little too early yet, but the best prospects for me looks to be helixcamera.com, who has a rigid polycarbonate housing for the S1 IS for about $170.

I just sent them an email to have them notify me whenever they get them. Maybe if some of you also like the looks of them you should do the same to help nudge them along.

This is one awesome camera, and I am excited about the prospects of what I can do with it.  I just can't afford the $1200 price of the  Ikelite.
