i use a canon powershot s1 IS on the beach, shooting surfing video and stills and have a problem in bright sunlight seeing my viewer or lcd. i cannot find a lcd hood for this model and am looking for ideas to compensate. i am basically guessing at what i am shooting pictures of. any ideas to help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi win kahn and welcome to the Q&A Board.

Hmmm, does the S1 have a LCD brightness adjustment feature? If so, try that but it may not be enough. I'm personally unaware of any options other than an lcd hood. Have you tried Hoodman? They say they're pretty good.

Hi there, under those kinds of conditions (very sunny, glare, etc.), I just use the viewfinder.  Smiley

I may be wrong, but I think win said the problem was with the viewfinder (viewer) too. So, the difficulty is with both the viewfinder and LCD.

Ahhhh, I thought Win meant viewer as in the ("or") LCD. Hmmmm, I don't know why the viewfinder would be hard to see under bright sunlight as it's shielded as soon as you put your eye to the eyepiece. Gee, that's perplexing indeed.

hoodman doesn't make a hood for this camera. and both the viewfinder and the lcd are hard to see in the bright, glaring sun. i may just order the closest hood and see if it can be used with my lcd. thanks for the help. there is only one lcd brightness adjustment on the camera menu and that is not enough too help.

Have you tried Canon's troubleshooter found on their PowerShot S1 IS Support page? If not, go to http://consumer.usa.canon.com/ir/controller?act=SupportDetailAct&fcategoryid=223&modelid=9824 . They should be able to help.
