I've been looking at accessories for my digital camera (Kodak DX6490) and was wondering what advantages/new abilities a wide angle lens might give me?

Hi Beckett and welcome!

The wide-angle lens (SCHNEIDER-KREUZNACH XENAR 0.7x Wide-Angle Lens) will give you an equivalent of a 26.6mm lens. This will allow you to include more of the scene in your composition both horizontally and vertically from the same shooting position. Great for dramatic scenics as well as other types of shots.  Smiley

Wide angle lenses are also great for inside shots, of groups of people and interiors  (wide angle lenses are expecially useful for professionals such as realtors, interior designers).

Unless there is plenty of light inside, it's best to use an external flash that has a wide-angle diffuser. Not all of us have that option so, if using the built-in flash inside, make sure you stay within the flash-range.
