I was just recently given a Nikon Coolpix S50C, and I don't like it.  Please bear with me, because I don't have much background knowledge about picture quality, but...

It seems to me that my old coolpix L5 took better pictures.  By comparison, I think the pictures on my new camera have more noise and graniness, especially in photos taken in the dark.  I'm also a little put off that it only has 7.2 megapixels, just like my old camera.  The color of the photos seems a little strange, too, though I guess that can usually be fixed with editing.

Am I just not used to the camera yet?  Any suggestions on how to fix the problems I mentioned?

My first thought is to check the settings.  If you are using both cameras in "auto" mode, they may be selecting different ISO, aperture, shutter speed, etc.

And the gaininess (noise) may be because your new camera might be allowing a higher ISO value to be used in auto mode.  Some cameras allow only a certain maximum ISO when using auto, some don't limit it.
