The histogram - on-camera and in photo editing software - shows the number of pixels of each color that are in your photo image.

The on-camera histogram can help you to avoid a washed-out (over-exposed)  photo - too much white - and an under-exposed photo - too much dark/black.

More info HERE on using the histogram.

It is a very handy tool!!   Smiley

Amen!!   Grin  (well ... they rule in the realm of photo editing  Wink )

And ... an additional note/tip .... if you use the on-camera histogram properly, you won't need the editing software's histogram as much later. Smiley  Saves a lot of work ... and aggravation. Smiley

I've often been intimidated by technical stuff like this.  My approach to photography has often been like playing music by ear.

I really need to learn stuff like this and hone my skills.

Hey Peppergal, welcome to digicamhelp.

I know what you mean.  Technical stuff can be quite intimidating, and can take time to learn.

Try one new thing at a time.  Our cameras can do so much more than we realize.  Play with the settings and stuff.  Have fun. :-)  As you learn new things, and use them, they become more and more like "playing by ear". :-)
