Hey, I just purchased this camera today, and when I try to take a picture, sometimes it just turns out black(unless i use the flash) and when I press the display button to use live view shot(live view is on) it just displays black, it will only take pictures when the flash is on, and im already in a well lit area..am I doing something wrong?

Hi craigydee and welcome to the Q&A Forum!

Sorry to hear about the problem with your Canon XS. In this case, without looking at the camera and because of many variables involved, I highly recommend you call Canon Tech Support. They can offer a fix, or suggest you send the camera in for repair. Your camera should still be on warranty.

I'm curious, though, what shooting mode are you using? If you're using full auto, switch to P mode to see if things improve.

Hi,

I have one tiny hypothesis, following what Gail suggested. Maybe you are using the camera in manual mode, and the scene is too dark for the settings that are configured in that mode?
