Photographing my dog has always been a challenge.   She is lovely, but not always photogenic - she does not like the camera (too much flash in the past I fear.)

Yesterday when I took my new Canon Rebel Xs out of the box I was playing around with it - with no flash.  Never had much success indoors without flash.  Until now.  This is possibly the best picture I've ever taken of this dog.  (She's an English Shepherd.)  I love how soft and gentle her eyes look - and I love how the finest details have been captured - check out the fuzz around her mouth under her nose.

What a great shot!

One of the main reasons I moved to a DSLR a year ago is because of it's high ISO/low light performance compared to a compact digital camera. I have not been disappointed. When shooting wildlife, I sometimes need to set the ISO to 800 or 1600 to get a proper shutter speed.

Enjoy the XS, it's a great camera. It's the little brother of the XSi. For those learning to use either camera, my Blog entries sharing what I learned about using the Canon XSi may be of some help:
