Digital cameras 101

Hi All,

I am looking for some help and information.
I am only just getting into this game for some fun.
I bought a nikon D40X, it came with a Nikon AF-S DX 18-55mm f3.5-5.6G II Black and Nikon AF DX 55-200mm F 4.0-5.6.
Seem to be doing all that i need it to so far, i also just bought a 2x Auto Focus Tele Converter for it from here http://www.sakar.com/p-262.aspx?categoryid=142. I know it does not work with the 18-55mm but was told it will work fine with the 55-200mm. Now i dont know if i am doing something wrong, but when i conect it to the camera and them the 55-200mm lense to that, i can not get a good focus on anything, it does not give me any further distance nor will it even take a picture, just makes strange sounds.

I know some of you sit there lol, but i am green and new to all this stuff, please help

Hi Phil and welcome. It may be that there is an issue with the converter, especially if the lens works fine without it. It just could be that the converter is in fact NOT compatible with the camera / lens combination. Even better known third party converters (Sigma, Kenko, etc.) have been known to have issues however, for example, there is a known issue with Kenko converters and some Canon lenses where it's necessary to tape the pins on the lens for it to work. If you purchased the camera and lenses locally I'd recommend going back to the store and working with someone there otherwise I would suggest contacting Nikon to get their input.

I agree with Mike that you should contact Nikon. I'd so so before contacting the place you bought it from.

I'm not very familiar with Nikon DSLRs but do know the focus motor drive for some models, such as the D60, is built into each lens, not the camera body. As a result, it is not compatible with all lenses and it may not be compatible with your teleconverter. So autofocus may not be supported.

Do you happen to know the brand name of the teleconverter. It doesn't give any info at the link you provided.
