Hi.. I have to take digital compressed tiff images of old handwritten books.  Scanning to jpg and then converting to tiff  was disasterous.  Looking to see if anyone knows if a camera that will take compressed tiff pictures?

Thanks,

Biran

Hi Brian and welcome!

As far as I know, the TIFF format is uncompressed, not compressed.

I am personally not aware of any newer digital cameras that offer the TIFF format but there are some very good older models that do.

The Nikon 4500 would be ideal for your type of work; it is known to have outstanding macro capabilities. The Nikon 5400, which I own, is also an excellent choice and does excellent close-up photography (though I think most Nikon afficinados would agree the 4500 is a tad better than the 5400 for macro work).

They are both slow by today's standards and the LCD screens are small, but these features are less important for macro work.

I think you can still buy both at good camera shops, such as B&H Photo:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com

Or you can buy them at places like eBay and http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/board/10

There may be other cameras too. A place like B&H could help you.

As an aside, if you decide to get the Nikon 5400, I'm considering selling mine. If you're interested, contact me by PM.

Typically TIFF by definition isn't compressed. How about just scanning to TIFF rather than JPG? You should be able to assign the format (TIFF) when scanning.
