hi, im new on here, and im looking for a digital camera to take on road trips and the like. im not actually looking for advice on buying a camera, just wondering something:

what im looking for is a system where i can take pictures, save them on the camera or memory card, then upload the files directly from the camera or card onto the net via a card reader or usb cable at any internet-capable computer. is there any way to post pictures directly onto a photo-sharing website without needing to install software to convert file types?

Hi washingtondc.  Welcome to digicamhelp. Smiley

If you take photos in the "JPG" format (which most all digital cameras do by default), then there is really no conversion needed at all before uploading.  The only thing that some photo web sites may require is a resize.  Some sites do not allow large image files, so you would have to reduce your photo image sizes before uploading.

Unless you take them at a small, low quality format, then you would automatically have small image file sizes that may work at most sites.  Some sites will not care about size ... but the larger your files, the longer uploading and viewing will take.

But as far as format and uploading, you would need no special software at all.  All you need is Windows Explorer (or similar) to copy files from card to computer.

I hope that helps. Smiley

Have you taken a look at any of the WiFi digital cameras? Canon, Kodak, and Nikon offer them.

For example, Kodak offers WiFi EasyShare One digital cameras. They can send images wirelessly to the Kodak EasyShare Gallery.  You can only transmit the images to their gallery.

The Nikon P1 and P2 sends to PictureProject.

Some WiFi cameras only transmit to a WiFi enabled printer or computer, so I suggest you visit the manufacturer's websites and see if there is a camera that suits your needs.

This really doesn't apply directly to your question, but I thought I'd mention it anyway: A USB drive with U3 technology.

There are free programs such as Shutterfly Studio or zeec uploader, which let you upload images to their photo sharing sites from a USB drive. It's not wireless, and you will need to transfer your photos from the memory card to a computer and then to the USB drive.

But you can install various programs on flash drive with U3 (many programs are free) and use where ever have access to a PC. When the USB drive with U3 is inserted to a PC, a menu launches so you can access programs. I have Irfanview, a mini word processor and a browser loaded onto mine.
