Canon and Microsoft have issued warnings which can be found here:

The problem pertains to the loss from ones' computer running Microsoft Vista of TIFF images shot with certain Canon Digital SLRs. If you shoot with the Canon EOS-1D or the EOS-1Ds AND you run Microsoft Vista you will want to read these notices.

Wouldn't be caught dead until they get it to work properly with everything I use.

Yeah, I thought that was pretty odd (and potentially scary) too! Shoot, I'm still using Windows 2000. Call me crazy, but I'll wait a bit longer to upgrade my OS.

OK so I lied. Normally I wouldn't but I had a spare machine (my sons "old" one but much more buff than mine  :-/). Thought the HD was going so I replaced it and had an easy upgrade to Vista Ultimate available so I figured "why not". I have to say that Vista for images is worlds above XP, it just seems to handle them so much better. I've got a single monitor using a KVM switch between the two machines and I can't express how much better the images look with Vista. I'm sure the graphics card has something to do with it (not quite comparing apples with apples) but I think it's super. I expect this to become my editing machine....  

Just a follow up $.02 worth.

Oh, I updated DPP too and the new noise reduction feature  is a nice addition...

So, Mike. Do you like Vista?

I've been hearing a lot of bad things about it. My computer may be going so I was thinking of replacing it with a Laptop. But it's difficult to get one without Vista.

I hear Dell is charging extra for those who want XP instead, and within a few months, I think Microsoft is planning to stamp XP out altogether.

I like what I've seen of it so far. Understand that I'm running a second machine just to play with it because I can and there are a lot of things that I have hooked up to my main machine (as well as my current software) that won't work with it.
I certainly wouldn't be happy to find that my version of xyz software wouldn't work with it and I had to upgrade. $$$$
For people who are in a position to play, go for it. If your PC dies and you're given no choice but to upgrade you may have expenses you're not expecting, new printer, new software and the obvious, upgrades to your hardware.

Vista will probably be a good product, but apart from the Canon compatibility probles, there are many, many things that are not supported yet. As Mike pointed out, upgrading to Vista might mean changing the printer, the webcam, most softwares, etc.

Vista users nowadays are really beta testers.

Gail, if you have a valid XP license, you could easily purchase a computer without OS, remove XP from your older computer, and install it on the new one. It would be perfectly legal, and XP will still be working for many years. NT4 was still supported until recently.

From the little experience I have with it, Vista is cute, and prtty natural for the most part, but it's MUCH too flashy and memory consuming for my tastes... I was still using the Classic interface up to a few months ago

Spousal unit has been building computers for years (as a hobby) and can talk you through the how-to's if you want to install your copy of XP on a new computer.

In the meantime, I'm still running with 2000 on the PC and OSX on the mac!
