I have some avi video that was taken using my Canon S2 IS.  I need to use that video in a DVD presentation that I'm working on.  My video editing suite (Sony's Vegas Movie Studio) doesn't recognize the avi files.  Help says:

"Some newer .avi files have attributes that make them unreadable by applications that don't support what is known as DX AVI. These files are usually compressed with a DV codec. Vegas Movie Studio software does not currently support these files."

My work-around solution was to put the video clips back onto the S2, hook it up with the A/V cables to my mini-DV camcorder and record them to tape there, then transfer from the camcorder back to my computer.  I know Vegas will be able to use the files the camcorder produces.

New problem: if there's a way to upload video to the S2, I can't find it.

Is it possible?  Anyone have any other solution I could try?

I just thought of something - I may can send the AVI's straight to my camcorder, and then download them back to the computer (without the "DX attribute" or whatever).  Seems ridiculous, but it just may work.  I'll post back.

No luck.  I guess the "DX attribute" or whatever won't transfer the the camcorder.

Sorry if this is getting a bit off-topic for the Q&A board - I'd really like to just get the video clips back to my camera if that's possible.  But I'll try any work-around anyone can come up with.

Problem solved.

Since Windows Media Player recognizes the files, I thought surely Windows Movie Maker should recognize them.

It does.

Open the files in Movie Maker and save them as another format supported by Vegas.

Hurray!

Not as glad as me.  Did I mention it's actually my wife's project?  And I assured her she should just take the Canon S2 instead of the camcorder to shoot the little video clips?

If it hadn't worked, I'd be in trouble!   Grin

Anyone interested in some more information on this can check out a thread I started (and is actually still going on) on this forum.

Long story short, if you want to edit your S2 video (or any video recorded as MJPEG in the avi container) on your computer using a video editing suite, you may need to download a codec like this one, or you can use the work-around I mentioned earlier (with some possible degradation in quality).
