First of all I am new to digital photography. I recently purchased a Canon S2 IS and am loving it.

In looking at some Exif data I often see Jpeg (6) I belive that is a quality rating. Why not use a higher quality like (10)Huh

Also in the data there is Matrix (5) I belive Matrix is a metering mode but have no idea about the (5) Can this be changed??   Where do can I even find the info on the number I do not see it in any of my files??

Thanks for any help

Hi Al K,

Welcome to the Q&A Board! Glad you're enjoying your new digital camera.

You really don't need to be concerned about the numbers in the EXIF data. The numbers, known as Marker notes, simply represent a program or other camera information. Below I'm providing a reference where you can learn what each number stands for.

The most valuable way to look at EXIF data is to gain information about the camera settings used to take a photo. The reason why is explained here:

I honestly wouldn't be concerned about the Jpeg number. It's more important to understand how compression affects the visual quality of an image. This article should help:

Take a look then let us know if you have further questions.
