Hi there,
I have read your tutorial / help / other messages on exif loss etc but find that when I rename the altered file and use 'save as' to save the pic I loose all the exif data except time and date. I have searched for solutions but without joy. My O/S is Win ME.
Any thought's, ideas, knowhow please??

Hi GeraldNZ,

Welcome to the Q&A Board!

This is a new one to me. I'm unclear about what stage in the process you change the name. Is it as you're doing the Save As, or after it is actually saved, then you rename it again? Are you working from an original file, or a copy of the original?

I'm also wondering what program you're using to view the EXIF info, and if you've tried more than one to check if the additional data is still there?

Thanks for your reply. To help clarify things -

I change or rename the name of the photo when using 'Save As..' after I have made any changes to it such as cropping or cloning out unwanted objects. I am working from the original file as I have discovered this loss of exif data the hard way i.e working with the original!

When I save the [new] file I save it at it at quality level 8 High - in the Image Options and Baseline - Standard in the Format Options and size at the default of 56.6kps.

I use the FinepixViewer, the software that came with my camera. It has a section that displays all the exif data, in fact heaps of it [data that is]. I don't have any other viewer installed at present. Until I make any alteration to a picture [copy], FinePixViewer will display all the data.

Does this help at all?

Hi GeraldNZ,

If I understand correctly you're unable to read the EXIF data using PS 7 but you can with FinePixViewer? If so it's possible that you're experiencing a known problem that PS 7 has with EXIF data. The recommendations I've found are to use a third party software to read the data. I haven't used it but there's one possibility here and another at opanda.com where you can view the exif in your browser. I have not tried the first so this isn't an endorsement. Wink

Hi Mike54,

No the problem is once I have altered a photo in any way in PS7 and saved it using the 'save as' option.

FinePixViewer no longer displays the exif data other than the date / time and a couple of other minor pieces of info - not all the detail that it showed before altering in PS7.

Hope this clarifies my problem.

Well Gerald, digging around on the web I find that you're not the only one with the problem as seen here but I've yet to find the cause (or a solution for that matter). One work around was offered using exifer to copy the exif data and then paste it back into the revised image but obviously that adds to the workflow. Not having PS7 to play with I can't do any experimenting so hopefully someone with that experience will come by.

Just for fun have you tried saving the image as either a tiff or psd to see if the exif remains in them?

Thanks Mike54 for the help.

Since posting my last message I have downloaded IrfanViewer and guess what? It shows all the exif data on any photo I have altered in PS7, even to the extent that it shows comments I added to the file / photo before any tinkering with it in PS7.

Obviously a FinePixViewer issue. Anybody else with this issue might be interested, especially Fuji camera owners.

Wonder if the dude on that link you sent me is the same issue? Maybe he is using proprietry software that came with his camera and doesn't like anything else [software that is] being used other than itself.

I will reply to him / her.

What format are you saving to when you 'save as'?
I've just edited a jpeg digicam pic in PS7, saved it as a 'TIFF', a 'JPEG', and a 'PSD' file, and they all still show the full EXIF data as in the original file.

I saved the photos as JPEG's. The data is there when I use software such as EXIF or similar - it is just that the Fuji software doesn't show it after it has been manipulated in PS7 or any other graphics software.

Maybe Fuji needs to sort it out. Roll Eyes
