Is there any free or cheap software around that will string a bunch of images (perhaps hundreds) together into an animated movie?

Hi Kjohrf and welcome to the Q&A Board!

Is Active-GIF Creator (http://www.hot-shareware.com/multimedia-design/active-gif-creator/) or Animate-Me (http://www.hot-shareware.com/multimedia-design/animate-me/) what you had in mind?

Yeah - that's about it.  Not sure it's worth it to me enough to buy, but thanks for the pointer.

I could have actually done a search before asking.  Smiley

Here's a review of a number of programs:

Motion Mage is free or $10, depending on the version.

I, for one, am glad you didn't. I hadn't heard of these programs before.

Me too. I had completely forgotten about that aspect of photography, namely, animation. Just think of all the possibilities; cartooning for your grandchildren, series of blooming flower buds, moonrise sequences, cloud development .... The possibilities are limited only by one's imagination. Thanks Kjohrf for posting.  Smiley

More on Stop Animation Software

I Can Animate provides the tools to create stunning animation movies using a range of stop-motion techniques, drawn animation and some special effects, usually only found in more expensive software.

I Can Animate is ideal for anyone interested in animation.

I Can Animate allows user to work with different video layers. You can capture images from a video camera, draw basic pictures or even use a combination of the two.  This multi-layer approach opens up new realms of creativity.

Also included is a chroma key feature. By using a blue or green screen backdrop, you can place a background image behind the captured subject, allowing the action to appear to be set in all sorts of locations, limited only by the user’s imagination.

There are some example movies as well.
