Hi, Mother in laws camera is a olympus c160. I had the camera connected to my pc using ulead photo explorer 7.0 se. I was deleting SOME images and lots (117) were left on the XD card. I used the batch rename fecility and disconected the camera. When we switched on the camera it said no image, the pics were NOT deleted. could this have something to do with renameing them? I did save copys to my pc so i have the pics and they veiw fine HOWEVER when i put them back on the xd card still they cant be veiwed on the camera.

Please help....... I don't want the mother in law after me.

Thanks Steve.

Hi there Steve!

If my son-in-law did that, well... Oh, never mind. You know!  Wink  Tongue

First of all, glad you have the images saved to your computer! Personally, I would have reservations about trying to transfer them back to the xd card. You can always burn them into a cd or copy them to something like a zip drive instead.

If I understand you correctly, you renamed the images while still on the card...something else I would avoid in the future. Digital cameras have their own file and folder naming system. At the very least, if you want to try something like that, you should rename them in a similar fashion. But again, it's not something I recommend. I don't understand the technical aspects but, from everything I've heard and read, folks always run into trouble when renaming or deleting images, or formating the card via a computer.

The images may still be on the card however so you may wish to try some rescue and recovery software. The software, in most cases, is very effective. We have a tutorial about it here:

http://www.digicamhelp.com/digital-photo-recovery-and-rescue/

Whether you recover the images or not, you should format the memory card in the camera. This will wipe everything off the card, and give you a clean "slate."

Hope it works for you so you stay in the good graces of your mom-in-law. Let us know how it goes.

Hi there, one other thing I'd like to mention ....

If your camera allows for multiple folders, check to be sure you are "viewing" the correct folder when looking for those elusive images. I mention this because it happened to me. My camera allows for multiple folders to be created on the card (from within the camera's menu functions).  I had inadvertently switched folders and couldn't, therefore, find my images. Yikes! After freaking out, I looked at the manual and realized what I had done. I switched to the correct folder, and lo and behold, there were my images.  Wink

Hi, The images which the camera could not read I saved back to my hard drive and My pc cant "see" them either. Anyone know of a way to alter them or do something so my pc can read them?. In pic properties it says format is PSP8 but in PSP8 I cant see them.

Thanks Steve.

Try this. Put .jpg at the end of each filename. So it would look something like this:

filename.jpg

If that doesn't work, consider emailing me one image:

... or use the extension ".TIF" (ex. filename.tif) if that's the format you shot them as.

Thanks for all advice. It turned out it was down to the fact I'd written to the XD card from my pc. I can do this on my sd card no problems, However I have been to the Olympus website and it warns if this has happened that a format MUST be done using the CAMERA only, even with a new card it says the same. Any how we have done this and the card works fine. A leason learned then i'd say!!!. quess u can get a way with it on a few card/camera's but it's not worth the risk.  Any how thanks for all your advice and help.

Hi, yep a general rule of thumb is to never format a memory card using a computer. Rather, format the memory card by using the camera's own format option. The camera's process adds additional data to the card which then enables the card for proper control and file system compatibility with that specific camera. If you format the card using your computer, this information is no longer on the card therefore making it unrecognizable to the camera.

Also, a word about erasing images off of memory cards ... use the "delete" option. Remember, you don't have to reformat a card if all you want to do is delete unprotected images.  Wink Formatting a card using the camera's format option allows your camera's firmware to recognize it and be able to use it. Typically you only have to do this once.
