Just got back from vacation and took lots of photos.  Am just starting to organize and go thru all of the pics. Trying to decide how best to share the photos with family and friends. Should I make a new web or subweb and use FrontPage Photogallery method or use an on-line service. I want to organize them into related galleries. Example: hiking Mt Willard and another one for hiking a different mountain and so on.

I have noticed that several folks use a on-line service like PBase that folks upload pics to.

Other folks have created what looks like a separate web for all the photos they wish to share.

What's the pros and cons of each method?

Sounds like you had a lovely vacation. Bet you got some great shots.

I'll tell you what I do. I use pbase, and there are many similar online photo sharing websites. There are only PROS to me using a service like this, unless you consider a small annual fee a CON.

As a web designer, for years I created my own photo galleries and uploaded my images, which take lots of server space if you want to display your photos at a decent size. And it took lots of time to prepare, particularly if I wanted to add more photos after the album was set-up.

Saying this, if you have a website and wish to easily incorporate and update a photo gallery which displays EXIF data, one of the best I've tried is JAlbum. Better yet, the software is free and can be downloaded here:

http://www.jalbum.net/

I happen to use pbase, which costs only $23 U.S. per year for 200 megabytes of storage. It is so easy to upload and organize photos into albums. You can even password protect galleries, or set the software to not display certain images to the general public.

When you upload an original image, thumbnails plus small, medium and large size images are automatically created (this is important so a person on a slower dial-up connection can select smaller images to view. The smaller images load faster into a browser). You have various gallery templates to choose from and, if you have the skills, can even create custom templates.

There are links to pbase and similar online photo sharing communities on our resource page:

If you wish to view one of my online galleries of photos taken in a Florida Scrub, and how it is organized, you can take a peek here:
