my camera tends to flash several times, sometimes as many as 5 before taking a picture.  any help with this would be appreciated.

Hi and welcome!

do not worry about this. With just about every camera around, this system (multiple flashes) exist and serve three purposes:

1-to reduce red-eyes by blinding people (seriously) so that their irises close. If red-eye reduction mode is activated, then that's what happens

2-to help with auto-focus. many cameras light up the scene a bit to help the AF system lock

3-to met properly. Almost all flashes will fire a short burst (or more) when evaluating the scene, in order to know the propre flash powe to fire when actually taking the shot.
