Hi, I just purchased the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens  for my camera.  I would like to know if I can use a teleconverter with this lense and if I can should I get 1.4 or 2x?  I read the canon teleconverters don't fit this lense.  What other brands would work?

I like nature photography especially birds and you never have enough reach so I thought this would come in handy.

Thank you for any assistance you can give me.

Hi,

teleconverters can be tricky. Not all teleconverters work with all lenses, and not all match up well to deliver good images. Usually, in fact, a tleconverter strongly decreases the image quality. Many users prefer to crop their pictures instead of using a teleconverter.

I'm not familiar with your particular lens, and with Canon teleconverters, but there are so many options out there that it's hard to give you accurate pointers. Your local camera store would probably be more helpful. One thing to keep in mind is that quality comes at a price, anothe is that generally speaking, 1,4x teleconverters will deliver btter images than 2x.

Thanks for your advice.  I know the Canon teleconverter won't work on my lense.  I think it is mainly for their prime lenses.  I was looking at one of the others available.

When I am birding sometimes you just need a little more reach especially if you need help identifying the bird.
