Apertures

I'm trying to explain how the lens aperture and the camera aperture work together in DSLR cameras to some of my students, but realized that i don't really know and can't really find any simple information about it..
Specifically... how does (or does not) the aperture range on the lens affect the aperture setting on the camera?
any insight???

Hi goldfish and welcome to the Q&A Forum.
Simply put, the aperture exists within the lens not the camera. The "controls" for the aperture exist within the camera not the lens. Together they create a system which, among other things, allows the user to select the aperture to be used by the lens.

The aperture range on the lens determines the range of apertures available for selection by the user (photographer) of the camera body.
