Personally, I don't pay that much attention to focal length; I just see which zoom range best frames a shot.

Deb, when Gail said that,  I think she was referring more to the actual number/value of the focal length.  That is at least what I meant when I said "I usually don't consider it either".

Of course I pay attention to the actual effect of the focal length - depth of field, composition, etc. - in the frame.  As you said, it is very important there.

Maybe we didn't explain that very well.  Sorry.  Embarrassed Smiley

Your point was a good one.  I just didn't want anyone to think we were saying focal length is not important.  It is very important.  The number just doesn't matter as much as the effect. Smiley

I guess once you evaluate your images later, and look at the EXIF data, you can determine what focal lengths are working best for what subjects, effects, etc. Smiley

And remember the digital conversion as mentioned above!  Tongue

Very helpful info.  Thanks Deb. Smiley

Yes, I was only referring to the numerical value. Glad Deb brought out those important points though.

So don't forget to use your focal length as a creative tool when composing a shot.

One more tool to fit in the bag. Wink
