Hi all.  I just ordered a Nikon D50.  I have been looking at getting an extra battery and prices range from $16.99(generic) to $139(actual Nikon). I was also looking at a battery grip that takes 2 Nikon batteries.  What I'm wondering, would it be safe to use an original Nikon battery with a generic??  The battery ratings are the same.

Hi marmaduke,

I can't speak directly for the Nikon but I have been using a variety of combinations (of Canon, Sterlingtek and Duracell batteries) with both my Digital Rebel and 20D with no problems.
