Is it okay to apply readily available plastic film protectors to the LCD of an S2 camera?

Yes it is. Just make sure the type you buy is made for LCDs and that they have low tack adhesive, for example, those made by Hoodman:

Of course, the best way to protect the LCD on the S2 is to reverse it. And when not using it, carry it in a camera bag or pouch.
