I’m trying to figure out Depth of field on my new Canon Rebel xsi.I take a lot of bird pictures.I’m following the instructions that came with the camera but having no success with this issue.Thanks.

Photographing birds in flight
For close-up photos of birds, it’s often preferable to use shallow depth-of-field (large aperture opening/small f#) to blur the background. For birds in flight, using a smaller aperture (larger f3#) will give you greater DOF.
A lot depends on the lens you’re using. Each lens has what is know as a “sweet spot” that you can read about here.
