What I like, and dislike, about the Canon SD890

Likes:

  • High ISO — Decent ISO performance up to ISO 400; ISO 800 not bad either, when compared to most other compact digital cameras.
  • 5X zoom - the only ultra compact as of this writing that has a five X zoom. Great to have the extra reach, though it isn’t long enough to capture detailed photos of distant subjects.
  • Control Dial — The dial, which surrounds the four-way controller, lets you scroll through menus and adjust so settings. However, it takes time getting the feel for it and it’s easy to miss the menu item when attempting to select it.
  • Print/Share button — Can be registered to one of 10 different settings such as White Balance and Face Select and Track . Mine is set to Exposure Compensation making it quick and easy to access and adjust this setting. I take a lot of photos in bright, outside light and frequently adjust the Exposure Value to suit the scene.
  • Face detection — Actually works pretty well. However, I keep Center Focus enabled because when FD is enabled and the camera doesn’t recognize a face, it reverts to AiAF focus mode, which I find less reliable than Center Focus.
  • Camera information displays on LCD, including aperture and shutter speed and remaining battery capacity.
  • Long battery life

Dislikes:

  • ON/OFF button can be difficult to use. But here’s a tip for those who don’t read or missed this in the manual: you can also turn the camera on and off using the Play button (manual page 163).
  • Lens distortion at wide angle when shooting perpendicular lines such as a door or wall.
  • Slight lag from shot to shot, except when using Continuous mode.
  • Painfully slow flash recycle time; very slow when using the flash in Continuous mode.
  • ISO 3200 mode — A scene mode; use this high ISO setting only if you’re desperate.
