Focus

By default, the A510 is set to AiAF (artificial intelligence autofocus). In this mode the camera automatically selects between nine AF frames on which to focus according to the shooting conditions.

I turn AiAF autofocus OFF so only the center AF frame is used. The center-point lets you focus more precisely and often more quickly.

Batteries

The A510 uses only two AA batteries. Do use rechargeable batteries (NiMH) since standard alkaline deplete fast! For example, using the monitor with two AA Alkaline Batteries will give you approximately 80 shots. Use NiMH and get about 300 shots on a charge!

Flash

The 510 has a zoom flash, which generally works well when used within the specified flash range. The angle of the flash illumination varies according to the zoom length of the lens. According to Canon, “there is minimal light quantity lost, and an efficient light distribution can be obtained.”

In continuous shooting mode, the flash only goes off for the first shot.

Video

The A510 takes video with sound, but the amount of time is limited to 30 seconds up to three minutes depending on the resolution. By using a resolution of 320 x 240 or 160 x 120 you’ll get the maximum recording time and a slightly better frame rate of 15 frames/second.

The zoom length must be set prior to shooting, as it can not be changed once recording begins.

Exposure and focus are set based on the first frame when you start shooting. Exposure does not change during a recording.
