The contenders

There are a number of entry level digital single lens reflex cameras on the market, and new ones have been recently announced. I've narrowed down my choices to three cameras at this time: one has been on the market since last year; the two others were announced this month.

If I decide to get a DSLR, it's going to be a big investment, so I'm really in no rush to buy soon. Besides, it's early January and more DSLR announcements are expected by mid-summer.

The current contenders are:

  • Canon Rebel XSi / EOS 450D (announced January 2008)
  • Nikon D60 (announced January 2008)
  • Olympus Evolt E-510 (announced March 2007)

The Canon and Nikon cameras are expected to be as fine and well regarded as their predecessors. The Olympus is a highly recommended camera too (it doesn't score as well in the high ISO department, though it is much better than compact digital cameras).

These digital SLRs have similarities as well as subtle differences that I'll write about elsewhere in this blog. One of the biggest differences between them is that the Canon and Nikon cameras have image stabilization built into their lenses and the Oly has IS built into its body.

I consider Image Stabilization a very important camera feature so I'm going to take a look at each type very carefully.
