Digital cameras are capable of producing amazing images. Despite their features and sophistication, it is possible, even likely, to take an improperly exposed photo.

Why leave all the decisions up to automatic settings that don't always produce acceptable results?

If you digital camera has manual or semi-automatic settings, give them a try. You will have more control over the overall exposure, look and even depth of your photos.
