Water & digital cameras

When a digital camera gets wet

If your camera gets submerged in water or even gets seriously splashed, wipe it off thoroughly. Remove the memory card and battery from their compartments and keep the compartment covers open to let the camera dry out.

Call a camera technician as soon as possible. They can provide expert advice as well as assess if there is a chance the camera can be repaired.

If the camera fell in fresh water, there may be some hope.

But if the camera fell in salt water, it probably can not be fixed due to corrosion. Because of the unlikelihood of salvaging a camera that fell in salt water, some owners thoroughly rinse it in fresh water...and hope.

Problems caused by seawater (and sand) are generally not covered by a warranty.
