Credit card extended warranties
If you purchase an electronic item such as a digital camera with a credit card, it may be covered by a free extended warranty. Credit card warranties generally match the time period and coverage of the manufacturer's original warranty up to one year.
For example, if a digital camera accessory you buy has a two year warranty, your credit card company will extend the warranty for a year. But if it only has a 90 day warranty, it will be extended for an additional 90 days.
Pay in full or no extended warranty
To qualify for the extended warranty, credit card companies usually require that the full purchase price of the camera needs to be charged to the card. If anything else is used as partial payment, such as a gift card, the warranty is voided.
Save the paperwork
Some credit card companies require registration of an item in order to qualify for the free extended warranty. When you make a claim, you'll have to submit copies of such things as the credit card statement where the item is listed, a copy of the original warranty and a copy of the sales receipt.
Don't assume
Don't assume your credit card company offers a free extended warranty. If it does, it may have different terms and conditions than outlined here.
For complete information, call the credit card company. Also request a copy of the warranty in writing.
