Memory cards
A memory card is the recording medium where digital image data is electronically stored. Memory card types include such formats as CompactFlash, Memory Stick, Secure Digital, Secure Digital High Capacity and xD-Picture Card.
Memory cards come in a variety of capacities from 16 megabytes to several gigabytes.
More images can be recorded on a card at low resolutions than higher ones. For example, a measly 16mb starter card that comes with some digital cameras holds between a one to more than 150 images. It all depends on the selected file size and compression settings.
Types of digital image storage media
Built-in or fixed memory
Very low-priced digital cameras may have built-in memory only, which limits the number of photos you can take at any given time. When the card is full, you must transfer images to a computer or other storage device, then delete the images from the card before taking additional photos.
Removable memory cards
Media that can be removed from a camera. Some digicams have built-in storage and also use removable cards.
Shoot and Store memory cards
Inexpensive "consumable" memory cards let you store pictures indefinitely, bypassing the need to store images on a computer or other device. These cards are available in supermarkets, convenience and drug stores.
