A shutterbug is happily taking photos at a special event. All of a sudden the lens on his digital camera retracts and the camera stops functioning. He quickly glances at the LCD:
"Replace batteries."

While newer models have improved battery life, digital cameras consume a huge amount of battery power. The main culprit is the LCD, although electronic viewfinders and continuous autofocus modes zap power.
Shut off battery-consuming camera features when not needed and always carry an extra set of batteries.
